Strata,2022

Public Art Commission for the SEIR Building, University of Texas at Arlington
Kilncarved glass and steel

Strata was a collaborative project with Carrie Iverson commissioned by the University of Texas at Arlington as a public art piece in the lobby of the Science, Engineering, Innovation, and Research Building.

Inspired by microfossils, chemical structures, and geological forms, “Strata” draws its imagery from the range of disciplines within the SEIR building. Artists Carrie Iverson and Jeremy Scidmore chose the glass kilncarving process- where images are formed through bas relief within glass- to reference those tactile surfaces, while the structure of the cubes provide a contrasting linear framework.

The twelve components reference the twelve lab neighborhoods within the building, while the colors were chosen for their relationship to the natural world. The piece is designed to be seen from above, where the primary focus is the glass squares, as well as from the side, where the focus is the formal variation in the height of the cubes and the interplay of the colors cast on the floor. Several of the glasses also optically shift color depending on the light source (natural, incandescent, LED, or fluorescent) incorporating the inherent chemistry of glass within the installation.
